Under the higher level classification of the protozoa proposed Cavalier-Smith (2003) two phyla, the Retaria and the Cercozoa are grouped together in the Infrakingdom Rhizaria. The Retaria is a phylum of typically amoeboid protozoans which usually produce shells or skeletons. They have filose, reticulate, or microtubule-supported pseudopods and the great majority has mitochondria with tubular cristae. It contains two subphyla which are important in marine plankton, the Foraminifera and the Radiozoa.
